Jury organizes the following event in New York next saturday, on the 7th of february at 7:00 P.M. at the Base (1302 Myrtle Ave, Brooklyn, New York 11221):
“I would like to invite you for screening of the film about one of the most important XX century left-wing intellectual – Stuart Hall. It narrates the history of that important Jamaican-born intellectual, one of the founders of the completely new approach to the cultural theory called Cultural Studies as well as co-founder of one of the most important left-wing political journal “New Left Review”. His own origin being born in colonial Caribbean Third World Country – Jamaica – caused him to develop the non-essentialist concept of the cultural identity according to which our cultural identification is contextually determined by the political ideology into which we are immersed. In this sense, there is no fixed cultural identity, but it is all the time performatively constructed. His ideas had big influence on all major left-wing theorists of the second half of the twentieth century. I will make short presentation of his ideas before screening and afterwards will follow discussion about the impact of his ideas”
